Morristown
A notable historic site, Morristown is the site where George Washington camped in the extremely brutal winter of 1779-80. It was a rough period in the Revolutionary War and a turning point for the Continental Army. It was chosen for its strategic location and provided a safe vantage point along the mountains to watch for the enemy. Washington set up his headquarters in the city at the Ford Mansion, which is available to tour.
The soldiers built thousands of log huts on the hillside for shelter. Today, only a small number still exist on the site. Despite the well-constructed shelter, food was low and the snow was high. The men were in a desperate situation. Stop at the visitor's center for more information and to learn about the bravery, fortitude and determination of these early Americans in their fight for freedom.

In addition to the park's history, regular visitors enjoy the walking trails through the peaceful woods.
Gateway
The Gateway Recreational Area starts at Sandy Hook and extends to Breezy Point, NY. Sandy Hook offers nature trails, historic military sites at Fort Hancock and recreational beaches.
The Fort, sitting at the mouth of the New York Harbor, was a strategic defensive location through to the Cold War. The lighthouse, opened in 1764, is the oldest standing one in the U.S. and continues working today. Many of the buildings are still available for touring including an officer's quarters. Many of the homes also are available for lease and refurbishment.
While you are there, take in view of the Highlands or New York from one of the beaches. Or, if you prefer something more active, try wind surfing on the bay, camping (in season) or biking around the park. Your dogs will love the bayside beach too! Check the website for seasonal changes to hours and access.
These sites have been valuable to the creation and defense of New Jersey, the NY-metro area and the United States. In addition to their important meaning, the also represent great beauty and nature areas for peaceful reflection and exercise.
