New Jersey is famous for the "Shore" in Summer. But when warm, sandy days are behind us and Fall comes calling, New Jersey is ready.
We've collected some of our favorite things about the Garden State this season.
Chester, New Jersey offers cute shops, farms and character. The annual craft show is a big draw, but just strolling down Main Street on a beautiful day is a perfect day trip. Grab some home made ice cream at Taylor's Ice Cream Parlor or lunch at Sally Lunn's Restaurant & Tearoom.
Speaking of the Jersey Shore, locals know it is still beautiful even when the weather cools. A day on Sandy Hook is unsurpassed. Walk the trails, hop on a bike or drive out to the lighthouse to see the historic sites. Just be sure to bring a jacket or hoodie if the breeze picks up.
The Garden State got its name from the gardens and farms throughout the state from North to South. When Summer tomato season turns to pumpkin and apple crops, there is no better place to be than one of the fabulous farms. Hayrides, pumpkin picking, corn mazes and apple cider are traditions in many area homes. Young and old can enjoy the baked goodies, petting zoos and local honey found at many of the locations. Demarest Farms in Bergen County, Allstede Farms in Chester, Wightman Farms in Harding, Eastmont Orchards of Colts Neck, Terhune Orchards of Princeton and Mood's Farm Market in Mullica Hill are standouts. While picking season is closing soon, many of these farms have year-round markets with a variety of specialties.
Leaf peeping is another popular activity and near peak currently. From High Point State Park to the Delaware Valley, day trippers can find beautiful Fall colors. Bring hiking shoes and a camera to hilltops and other parks across the state to see the display. Pictured below are Morristown and Princeton.
Oktoberfest and street fairs provide for lots of fun. Enjoy a special brew at Asbury Festhalle and Biergarten in Asbury Park or a German meal at the BlackForest Inn in Stanhope. There are dozens of Oktoberfest celebrations from Wildwood to Clark and Flemington to Hackettstown. Usually in late-September through October, there are still opportunities left to enjoy the festivities. Many towns also have street and craft fairs including vendors, music, food trucks and activities for kids.
It's never too late to enjoy the crisp days of fabulous Fall in New Jersey. One of the biggest events of the year is the Far Hills Race Meeting on October 21st. This annual tradition began in Montclair in 1870 and later moved to Far Hills in 1916. Originally, a fox hunt, it is now a steeplechase race with tens of thousands converging on the Somerset Hills to enjoy the festivities. Proceeds benefit a number of worthwhile charities.
Whatever your preference, spend some time getting out and seeing all that Fall has to offer.
