Dog owners know, pups are truly a family member and best friend. From a young age, pets teach us about responsibility, affection and loyalty. There is no better example of unconditional love than a dog.
They are always happy to greet you at the door. Even if you only took out the trash. Jumping around and offering a big wet "kiss" is a common welcome for any dog parent. Somehow a little dog hair doesn't faze owners in exchange for the long-time companionship of a furry friend.
Each dog though seems to have their own little personality. Some are divas, others are sun worshipers, many are protective, and yet others likely outsmart their family members. Have you seen the dogs that "rat out" other pets after the trash is dumped? What about service dogs that accompany a disabled person? They are amazingly intuitive and intensely curious. And, yes, silly. Who doesn't appreciate some zoomies or when they toss their own toy in the air?
Mario was adopted from the Tri State Basset Hound Rescue at 14 weeks old. He is now almost two years old and is a funny little boy who continues to entertain us with his boundless energy.
Mollie Dollie is six years old. She was adopted from the Tri State Basset Hound Rescue two years ago after she had given birth to nine puppies and very ill with heart worm disease. She has thrived being part of our family and is a happy and healthy hound. Her son Darwin is a model for Hush Puppies Shoes!
Ultimately, dog parents are supposed to be the pack leader. Let's face it though, in the end, we are trained. We don't hesitate to feed or walk them on time. We pet them when they ask. We buy them special treats. We let them sleep in comfortable beds. The dogs are clever. A pair a big brown (or blue) eyes looking up at us and we are done.
But that is the beauty of having a dog. Dogs can make us focus on the here and now. Feel love when we had a bad day. And ultimately fill quiet moments with a cuddle. We may "rescue" them, but they are always there to rescue us right back for all their days. There is nothing more inspiring than that.
Special thanks to our contributors for sharing photos of their best friends!
